Portugal

With a rich, centuries-long history, extraordinary hospitality and great new high-end boutique hotels, restaurants and shops - Portugal, is Europe’s perfect luxury destination where travelers can enjoy a variety of landscapes, activities and discoveries all easily accessed in one country, one culture. Portugal is still today relatively untouristed and remains authentic. While the authenticity is what should bring our guests to Portugal it is also what we would call a boutique destination. No opulent luxury here, but compensated for by the opportunity to experience a culture that hasn’t been overly tailored to the tourist.

Best times of the year to go: May – October.

Porto

Portugal’s “second city” has emerged out of Lisbon’s shadow in recent years. An exciting new dining scene, a revived riverfront now crammed with bars and cafes, and a general interest in all things Portugal have turned Porto into a major destination on the Iberian peninsula. Like its sibling, Lisbon, Porto is a hilly city filled with winding cobblestone streets that are flanked by centuries-old buildings with achingly beautiful tiled facades. There are plenty of parks wedged into this compact city of 200,000 people for when trudging up and down steep streets is too much. There are also a lot of cafes where the thirsty visitor can sip a glass of port, the city’s chief boozy beverage of choice. There is a great art and design scene in Porto. Travelers can trek across the city popping into various art galleries and design shops to get inspiration. And don’t miss stopping into Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world, a sightseeing landmark in its own right.

Valverde Hotel, Lisbon

Lisbon

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is the second oldest city in Europe (after Athens). And unlike Athens, though, Lisbon doesn’t necessarily wear its age on its sleeve. There are no ancient crumbling marble buildings on display here. Instead, hilly Lisbon is flush in rich aesthetics: from Baroque palaces to tree-lined boulevards to 18th-century buildings with colorful tile facades. The only European capital on the Atlantic Ocean is home to many atmospheric neighborhoods, each one different from the next, and all either crowning one of the city’s seven hills or lying deep in between those hills. Bairro Alto is crammed with intimate but lively bars; Alfama is one of the few districts that survived the earthquake of 1755 and thus is filled with ancient buildings, some of which house restaurants and bars that regularly put on fado concerts; and the art-centric Belém, a neighborhood that hugs river where de Gama and Columbus first set sail across the Atlantic. A dynamic dining scene. Locals and visitors tuck into delicious fare at everything from salt-of-the-earth tascas, or taveners, serving rustic, hearty fare to Michelin-starred eateries serving elevated and creative takes on Portuguese staples.

One of our Favorite properties:

Valverde Hotel, Reminiscent of London and New York town houses, Valverde Hotel has an classic and elegant sensibility, punctuated by contemporary furniture, works of art, objects and antiques. It is these pieces, the light, the comfort of the fabrics and materials, and the treatment of the property as if it were a personal residence, that create an intimate space, an a “Oasis of comfort and discreet luxury.”

Some of our Favorite activities:

Walk the city, listen to Fado music, and take a day trip to Sintra.

One of our favorite dining spots:

Cervejaria Ramiro, Anthony Bourdain’s discovers of Ramiro turned the local Cervejaria into a must stop by scene for locals and visitors. Ramiro serves up truly incredible seafood, including lobster, prawns and crab – all served by the kilogram.

Madeira

Madeira is a paradise perfected in a clifftop haven. Until you’ve experienced Madeira (that hair-raising landing, the cliff-hugging drives, its potent poncha cocktail), it might be difficult to understand its appeal. Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is a place of beauty and wonder that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. From the rugged coastline to the lush green mountains, the island is a treasure trove of natural beauty. As you explore the winding streets and historic buildings of Funchal, the island’s capital, you’ll feel a sense of calm and relaxation that’s hard to find anywhere else. Take a cable car ride to the picturesque village of Monte, where you can take in breathtaking views of the island and the sea below. But it’s the island’s natural beauty that truly captivates visitors. From the stunning cliffs and waterfalls of the Rabaçal Nature Reserve to the rugged beaches of Porto Santo, there’s no shortage of incredible landscapes to explore. And of course, no trip to Madeira would be complete without sampling some of the island’s world-renowned wines. But beyond all of these attractions, it’s the people and the culture of Madeira that make it truly special. The warmth and hospitality of the locals, the traditional food and music, and the sense of community that pervades the island make it a place that feels like home, even if you’re thousands of miles away.

The Azores, an archipelago of nine volcanic islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is a true paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The islands are famous for their hot springs, crater lakes, and volcanic landscapes. Take a dip in one of the many thermal pools in Furnas or Caldeira Velha, where you can relax and rejuvenate in the warm, mineral-rich waters. Or hike through the verdant forests and stunning valleys of Sete Cidades, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the iconic twin lakes. But perhaps the most striking feature of the Azores is its dramatic and otherworldly landscapes. From the towering peaks of Pico Island to the rugged coastlines of Sao Miguel, the islands are a photographer’s dream come true. And with its mild climate and ever-changing weather patterns, every day in the Azores offers a new and unique perspective on this breathtaking landscape.
